History in Harmony UPDATE # 29 Compiled by Boz Oram
boz@historyinharmony.com
www.historyinharmony.com
Welcome to Update Number 29 – and welcome to all members on the Update. Please feel free to contact me at boz@historyinharmony.com and if others would like to join, then let them know and I’ll gladly send out a copy to them.
Thanks also for your continued support and please keep passing this update around – New people are welcome and all you have to do is email me at boz@historyinharmony.com and I’ll do the rest. All links and websites have been checked out beforehand. They should all work just at the click of a button.
Next weekend, as I said in the last History in Harmony Update, I’ll be at West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire with Carter’s Fair. This weekend being the Pinkney’s Green event without enough steam… Next weekend is the full monty and you’ll see steam working properly. None of this namby pamby pretending to work and engine, but the real thing. If you break down, the ride(s) stop and no money comes in. Got to fix it so you’ll see a real fair as it ought to be. Never been? Well I’m ashamed of you – no not really but if you haven’t been, then please do make the effort as this is the only fair in the world that is right and proper for its vintage. See you there,. http://www.carterssteamfair.co.uk/carters_steam_fair_001.htm
To start off with in this edition…
From John Ham in Australia
Hi Boz
I am currently president of the Australian Mechanical Organ Society Inc. or AMOS for short. We have members in most Australian states and several in New Zealand and members instruments run the full range from small hand cranked buskers organs up to a 101 key Mortier. For some time now I have been receiving your updates, which I enjoy through our mutual friend Des Lang who is also AMOS secretary.
Your NZ correspondents Jim and Sarah Harper are members of AMOS and I thought it might be appropriate if you are planning a visit to inform you that this years AMOS organ Festival {see write up in FOPS Key frame KF 1-06 for last years festival at Wagga Wagga) will be held concurrently with the Tulip Time festival at Bowral and Mittagong from Friday the 6th to Sunday the 8th of October the At the conclusion of this years festival we are bussing to Sydney about 90minutes north to revisit our AMOS member Craig Robson’s collection which of course features the mighty Taj Mahal 101 key Mortier organ. In the opinion of the Grymonprez family this particular organ is the most finely voiced organ in existence today, and is considered by many to be the best Mortier in the world.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
John Ham
President AMOS
Spotlight Les Gets, Switzerland and Waldkirch tour
I do apologise for the date error in the last edition – The Dordrecht Tour leaves on the 18th May, not the 17th If you still want to go, phone up, as we might be able to squeeze you onto the tour. +UK (0)1980 621418
Please refer back to History in Harmony Update #28 for full details and websites.
Back to the Les Gets tour
Leaving on the 12th July, the tour starts from Basel on the French/Swiss border. To get here is by either train or flight so anyone from around the world can just literally drop into the tour. The first hotel being used is the Hotel Windenreuter Hof situated out in the countryside amongst trees and fields, so nice and quiet.
On the 13th a visit to Waldkirch, the place of the renowned festival, however just because the organ festival was last year, doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty of mechanical organs – especially as this year is the 200th anniversary of Ignaus Bruder producing his first mechanical organ. There are many different events going on, however we will be in the heart of the festivities in Waldkirch. During this day we visit the workshops of Stefan Fleck http://fleck-orgelbau.de/ down by the railway station, Jaeger and Brommer http://www.jaegerbrommer.de) as well as an English guided tour of the Elztalmuseum http://www.elztalmuseum.de/ http://www.waldkircher-orgelstiftung.de which gives a full insight into the 200 year history of mechanical organ building in the Black Forest. A full day I think you’ll agree.
On Friday we zip across to the Musee Baud http://www.museebaud.ch/ near the Swiss music box capital of St Croix where instruments featured are Gavioli, Poirot, Thibouville-Lamy, Weber, Imhof and Hupfeld. Infields near to the collection you’ll hear the sound of bells tonking away as the cows graze making milk for either cheese or their famous chocolate.
We move on today to Les Gets and the Alpine style Hotel Marmotte – a fantastic place to live in with excellent cuisine. http://www.lesgets.com/en/encemoment/nc/index.html and check out the video, which includes regular contributor Jorgen Roseland.
The weekend’s events courtesy of Mark Jefford and his language changing thingy so if the words come out more strange than usual, then its not me!

On the Sunday, if you wish, there is an option of going to Annecy, famous for its lake, its warren of lanes, passages and arcaded houses. Numerous restaurants and cafés with displays of geraniums and petunias – all really picture book pretty with the town surrounded by mountains totally framing the splendour.
Monday arrives with us moving on to Switzerland via Geneva and a scenic tour through this delightful country on our way to the next port of call being the medieval town of Rapperswill. We’ll be making the short distance to Fredy’s Mechanisches Musiksalon for an evening of music in one of the most charming settings for a musical collection. In the middle of town, Fredy’s collection was started when he was a real youngster and has continually grown into this sanctuary for all that is good in music. The collection hosts some of the finest instruments available – check out the website for more than I can show in this Update http://www.fredys-mech-musikmuseum.ch/.
One of the things that we are asked for is a day off to just go somewhere and mooch about. Well Lucerne is famous for its lake, steamers, http://www.clydeshipping.co.uk/nonclyde/viewalbum.asp?folder=Lucerne+Steamers Gottard Tunnel, http://www.gotthardtunnel.ch/start.htm the Rigibahn mountain railway, http://www.rigi.ch/website/english/index.html its Medieval town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucerne or http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/guide/lucerne/
The Transport Museum is one of the best and includes a mobile horse drawn, steam driven electricity generating plant that I believe is actually an earlier example that my own family’s! http://europeforvisitors.com/switzaustria/articles/swiss_transportation_museum.htm
Well there’s enough websites for you to be going on with I expect for this day.
Collections abound in Switzerland, however we try to bring you the best and the Nostalgisches Musikparadies of Adolf Kessler is no exception from a unique Spanish barrel organ of 1850 to orchestrions, dance organs including a rare Robot organ. We move on to Seewen Schweizerische Nationamuseen and try this website for info as the official one doesn’t work http://www.mediatime.ch/ausflug/musika.htm The Musee Suisse is has clocks, watches, mechanisms, organs, musical boxes, an Edwardian lounge and is housed in a stylish purpose built structure and is most likely the best example of a collection that is so comprehensive of the music of Switzerland. From one of the oldest pocket watches (RARE as hen’s teeth) to one of the largest fair organs ever made.
Finally, the tour comes to an end and the return to whence you came from – or should you wish to stay on and have further travelling, then let us know and we can sort it out for you.
Places left for this excellent tour – please contact Linda as soon as possible as there is a cut off date and we have to send in the rooming lists to the various hotels. People from other countries can of course fly straight Basel if they so wish. tours@historyinharmony.com
Inheritance Tax Final Part Now!
Continuing on from the last edition and my burst at our political administration taking monies for no good reason, this part is for everyone throughout the world for a bit of good management - this part is general housekeeping for everyone who is going to die.
I do hope that this has been of use to you and if you don’t use it, you’d better erase all Update articles from your computer, because when your family look through your papers, computer etc to find anything that might help them solve the mess you’ve left behind, will most likely curse you forever for not doing anything to help them.
TO SUM UP
Making sure that if anything happens to you today, tomorrow or next year should make the job of sorting out your affairs as straightforward as you can possibly make them. Let the person(s) who will be dealing with your Estate know where all of your papers are such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, share certificates, insurance policies on your life on your property, cars or especially on the toys. Deeds, hire - purchase agreements, business agreements etc. It makes sense to keep a checklist on all of your papers and records of importance. Change it when necessary and review it at least once a year.
WHERE TO KEEP THEM
On death, everything is generally frozen and cannot be dealt with until the legal process of winding up the Estate has been completed such as a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration have been duly sent, which means that if your papers are with the Bank, then you have no access to them. It therefore makes sense to keep papers at your home in a Deed Box or a fireproof container that can be purchased from specialised High Street shops. Your Will can be left with your Solicitor and if you do, keep a copy in the Deed Box at Home.
AFTER DEATH
If you wish to leave parts of your body to help other less fortunate people (not you silly, because you are already dead!) a Will is not the best place because by the time the Will is read, your body parts will be past their “sell by date” A more sensible way is to carry a donor card at all times and these are available at all Doctors Surgeries, High Street Post Offices, High Street Chemists. Let your loved ones know that you intend to do this so that no unnecessary heartache will happen at the worst time.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
If you have any particular wish as far as funeral arrangements are concerned such as music, a really decent amount of cash behind the bar for a splendid wake (especially if I turn up), or you want certain things to happen such as cremation or maybe being buried at sea etc, then tell your next of kin NOW, because your Will may not be found until after you have been buried. This is particularly true of some religions where burial takes place very soon after death.
PUTTING THINGS IN JOINT NAMES
Even though you have a Will (or you ought to have put your mind wheels in motion by now if you have taken any of this in), it will take time to arrange for your assets to be placed in the hands of your beneficiaries. In the meantime, there will be a need for the survivor to live. It makes sense to have “a” bank or building society account in joint names so that the survivor has immediate access to cash. Make sure that only one signature is needed to sign the cheques. If you already have a joint account, make sure that is/will still be operable after death.
LAST BIT NOW!
Life Assurance documents and payments now come into play. They will pay up what is due as quickly as possible assuming that you have put the policy into a suitable trust to the beneficiaries, otherwise you will have to wait for the Estate to have been dealt with, which of course goes into the final total of the Estate’s Worth! The money can take months even in a straightforward case to pay out to the beneficiaries so please do review your insurance policies and if any one of you say “everything’s covered” and you actually haven’t looked at them in the last 12 months, then you aren’t doing the right thing for you or your family.
STILL WORKING?
If you are still at work, then your Employer must be informed as the company may have set up a pension scheme for your widow (or widower) and dependants and there may also be a life assurance policy in the package. There may also be a wage packet to pick up and holiday pay to get, a long service award, or maybe a token from the workforce who wanted to show their thoughts by a whip-round and a thank you for working with such a nice person. (It might also be that the company you work for couldn’t stand your flaming GUTS, and was thinking of ways of getting rid of you as well), so do have a chat with your spouse beforehand!
The local Department of Social Security (DSS or whatever your equivalent) Office will also be able to help you claim any state benefits to which your family is entitled to which could include a Widow’s Payment or Widow’s Pension. There are also bereavement councillors that you can go and just talk to such as CRUISE (in the UK) and there is also the Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) in most towns and cities where you can find out about your rights etc free of charge, and they will point you in the right direction to help you on your way.
A REMINDER
This is written by and Englishman in England – the laws in your own country are most likely different, however I expect that the principles are similar; in any case, check your situation and talk to a financial advisor to get the best advice. You should of course satisfy yourself that your family will have enough capital and income after your death to maintain at least the same standard of living and your insurance advisor will be able to help you review your situation. If you have a shortfall somewhere, he will advise you in your own best interest, however you have now the tools to go and ask intelligent questions to get the answers that YOU require rather than what THEY want to sell you.
There are rules and regulations that help both the advisor as well as the client, so don’t be put off doing the right things for the wrong reasons.
And I reiterate, do take the trouble to arrange your affairs so that they can be dealt with in the easiest fashion and if something needs to be done, then for your family and your own peace of mind, do it now.
FOR ALL OF YOU
For those of you whose country has actually seen sense and removed this ridiculous tax, there are still a few things that will be of use to you as well as people who are subjected to this tax, such as making a will, using life assurance to make you family’s lives a bit more secure after death, checking out your pension rights and how much you will get upon retirement and doing a general review.
Please don’t even think that you are covered either if you haven’t looked at your paperwork in more than a year, because you just aren’t. I hate to say this, but just check out your policies, especially if, in this unsure employment climate you have lost your job, your circumstances have changed or you need to change your lifestyle, you will have to cover yourself
Remember that to do a financial healthcheck is part of your normal, yearly financial planning and it is the time when you find out about the many holes in your finances YOU have every right to enquire about YOUR finances. Remember that you have paid for them, and therefore you have the right to see them. Don’t be fobbed off with jargon and psychobabble – things are changing for the better nowadays. Institutions are crumbling, laws are becoming unusable, and people are questioning what is happening more and more.
Please don’t be frightened anymore of just asking, because there is a really strong support group out there especially for you.
I have tried to be as exhaustive and unbiased as I possibly can. I give my sincerest apologies to any politicians that might actually be trying to do a good job for their wages, but believe you me, you’re voice isn’t being heard here in the UK.

From John Ham in Australia
John gives a further few points that might be of use when planning your future…
A couple of comments about matters raised in the History in Harmony Update #27.
Taxes on your estate after death or 'Death duties' as they were called here in Australia were a tax levied by the various state governments.
They were abolished here when one forward thinking state, Queensland realized that if they abolished these unfair taxes then all retirees would move to Queensland and bring their money with them. This is exactly what happened and in a very short time span all states had abolished them.
One problem you face under your seven year rule that you didn't address but it is frighteningly valid is that if you transfer your assets to another as you describe and if that other person then dies (and young people do die), you are back to square one or worse. (In this case, you can apply a Life Assurance Policy to cover the amount and put the whole lot into trust and then the beneficiary should also do the same if they have dependants. If the whole family die, including beneficiaries without issue, which is not a nice scenario of course, that particular situation doesn’t arise and then it is up to the legal beagles and family tracers to find the next surviving relative. This can be quite interesting as you normally get a family tree with the set-up as well which puts you in touch with other members of your family Ed)
John continues……
Solution to this situation, do what so many sensible English people are doing and retire to Australia, enjoy all that disgustingly good weather and lifestyle and ultimately die secure in the knowledge that the tax man won't get your money. I have a friend who married an English lady and they now summer in England and then summer in Australia and haven't seen a winter for years!
Nice thought John – can I quote you when I get my residency?!
Stop Press
Just in from James Lowther, on the 16/17th June, both engines plus scoop will be at West Park, Rockbourne near Fordingbridge in Hampshire. Those of you who have gone up Coombe Bissett hill will have seen the turning to the left at the top of the hill – you know the place; just before anything heavy has to go down into crawler gear and slow you up if you are behind.
Rockbourne is famous for its Roman remains; however on this weekend, something more rare will be a demonstration of the shifting of a dredging scoop. Ever seen this in action? I thought not; so here’s your opportunity of filming, chatting to and if so desired, chat to James to get you lake dredged out. I have to say, he is the best in the business – reason is, is that I went to a previous job and saw that was done by another dredging company just a few years ago is already silted up, whereas James had done it previously and it lasted almost twice as long. Need I say more? Engines involved are Fowler ploughing engines Windsor and Sandringham and the scoop is the latest in the technical design of removing as much mud from lakes in the most efficient way.
From Wolfgang Brommer in Waldkirch
Dear Boz,
This year we have in Waldkirch, the Big 200 Festival Year of the first street organ made by Ignaz Blasius Bruder.
All through the year will be some special events.
Starting with different concerts and workshops and also special exhibitions in our local Elztalmuseum – organized by “Waldkirch Organ Foundation” and the Elztal-Museum (http://www.waldkircher-orgelstiftung.de)
A second wonderful exhibition in Germany’s biggest museum for mechanical music instruments in BRUCHASL (see information on our website and link to Bruschal: http://www.jaegerbrommer.de) is also taking place. (I have to admit that both of these collections are fantastic on a normal day so this year will be exemplary)
Friday, September 1St 2006 is the exact date of the 200-year celebration. We will start with a new idea of (what we call) Organ Street – an association with the museums in Seewen (Swiss), Triberg, Waldkirch, Bruchsal, Speyer, Ruedesheim, Braunschweig (Germany) and Utrecht (Holland) will start.
You will be able to find in these museums organs from Waldkirch being shown. On September 2/3rd will be the organ festival there at the Museum in Bruschal (German Mechanical Music instrument Museum in German called Deutsches Musikautomatenmuseum)
Also the original handwritten book by Ignaz B.Bruder will be published in German consisting of some 278 pages of information by Ignaz Bruder – it will be the first time that we will have full access about what he had written. It’s a new book out from our Waldkirch Organ Foundation. Sorry, but so far it’s only written in German!
If you need more information please feel free to send email or have a look to our websites.
Kind regards

Even more information about the Waldkirch Bruder Festival via Jan L M van Dintern for Sunday 18th June
Hello Boz,
Further to your message about the organ concerts in Waldkirch on Sunday 18th June Stefan Fleck has asked me to give you further details.
On that Sunday morning a Weber barrel-orchestrion will be inaugurated in Zell am Harmersbach. The instrument has been restored and Henning Ballmann has ´pinned´ the new repertoire onto the barrel. Unlike the usual style of barrel, this one needs to be pinned spirally, making it possible to play longer compositions.
Paul Fleck Söhne Orgelbau are at the moment busy restoring the 79 keyless Gebr. Richter - model 2 - from the Elztalmuseum ex Jan L.M. van Dinteren. The organ has totally been dismantled and transported to Fleck´s workshop.
On Sunday afternoon at 3.00 p.m. an outdoor concert is planned in front of the Elztalmuseum, where Stefan Fleck will explain the musical possibilities and disposition of the organ. Stefan Fleck and Raphael LĂĽthi will assist the concerts, introduced and commentated by Jan L.M. van Dinteren. After this concert some other instruments in the museum will be played.
Kind regards,
Jan L.M. van Dinteren
Fantastic News
Reported in Update #28, I spoke of Roger Burville being in intensive care at Margate Hospital. Well good news abounds - he has been let out! Yes Rog is back on the mend thank goodness, however he’ll have to stay put at home for a while yet, so speaking to him on the phone today I asked whether he is able to receive calls and he has said a resounding “Yes”, so if you want to catch up with him his phone number is 01227 722308. Well done Roger and hope that you continue on with your excellent recovery.
Talking of Old Troopers (sorry about the “old” part for both concerned…)
109 Not Out
Britain’s oldest known First World War veteran Henry Allingham aged 109 has a few memories, however when asked what the secret of his long life was after speaking at a ceremony where he was granted the freedom of the town of Eastbourne, his home for 46 years, his answer was” Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women – and a good sense of humour, but I make sure that I keep within my limitations!
Mr Allingham is the last surviving founding member of the RAF and was presented with a vellum scroll, a badge of honour and a bottle of malt whiskey and he turns 110 on D Day June 6th.
Metrication - Soapbox
From Mr Allingham who fought to keep our democracy and basic rights, to a bunch of (I would have said here morons, but decided against it as I wouldn’t want to let them feel above their station) oddballs who have little of no knowledge about weights and measures? Yes, you guessed it – those unelected people that have the power to influence everything about our lives throughout Europe.
It appears that Shopkeepers could be fined £2000 should they display Imperial measures from 2010! Yes, you guessed it, the EU says that the UK will be banned from displaying goods in pounds and ounces alongside kilos and grams after 31st December 2009, which of course will give plenty of lawyers and the legal beagles plenty of opportunity to make money – which I guess is what the whole scam is all about. As we (the common people) all know, Imperial measures, including threads, weights and of course feet and inches are all important in the rebuilding and reconstruction of virtually all of our equipment. When all said and done the mass of the object stays the same, it is only the description that is different. Could it be that our powers that be think that they have wasted so much in time and money in metric measures, that when we convert it into Imperial measures, then we will be able to understand what they have done.
Who knows, but patrons and honorary members of the British Weights and Measures Association http://www.bwmaonline.com/ have written a letter (hopefully on foolscap sized paper) condemning the move and amongst the 21 signatures are musicians Sir Tim Rice and Jools Holland, writer Jilly Cooper and chef Antony Worral Thompson. The letter is also signed by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the explorer, Vice Admiral Sir Louis Le Bailly, and historian Andrew Roberts.
Further details can be found at http://members.aol.com/footrule/ and finally you can get a good idea of why it is so important to keep our imperial measures by going to http://www.bwmaonline.com/Measures%20Count.htm
Of course the real reason for change is for those with their fingers in the pie to become filthy rich at everyone’s expense – it will cost all walks of life so much to convert to this metric system, which does not have Whitworth, BSP, inch, full division or the ability to actually be really precise.
I also remember recalling that Belgium, made it illegal to use Imperial measures and this was supposedly just before WW2, but look at the early mechanical organs built and many parts of them, magically measure up to Imperial sizes, so don’t tell me that that this metric stuff cannot be used alongside Imperial sizes.
The other thing that I just can’t quite understand, is why is it illegal to use safe measurements when there are now so few people in engineering in the UK. Maybe this site might illuminate http://www.prolognet.qc.ca/clyde/illumin.htm
Hooghuys International Organ Festival – 10th September
Just received communication from Luc Bal in Belgium about their festival in Geraardsbergen being the first Hooghuys Festival for Mechanical Organ Players on September 10th in Belgium. Interestingly enough Geraardsbergen might not ring a bell here, but if I say Grammont, that might make more sense, as this is the place where the original Mannekin Pis originated and a collection of both sexes are featured in the town’s museum. However I have digressed, this is also where the factory of the famous Louis Hooghuys came from and it just happens that my own instrument is now in its 100th year and what better opportunity of returning back to its birthplace on such an occasion as this festival. www.hooghuysfestival.be
So far, looking at the website (not converted into English yet) there are quite a few instruments already booked. I only spoke to Luc on the phone the other night, so will inform you of the latest developments in due course, but what a fantastic idea. Returning your instrument back to its birthplace. Yes I know its been done before, but this one I can physically do – Waldkirch is just too far for an old vehicle (and I’m not talking about the truck, but me!)

From PR Newswire
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/04-10-2006/0004337776&EDATE=
It began with one simple idea:
Load truck trailers for inland transport directly onto ships. That simple idea -- made famous by North Carolina trucker Malcolm P. McLean – would lead to today's 40-foot corrugated metal box with doors called the shipping container. "The Box That Changed The World", a new illustrated history book, tells the story of containerization beginning in the 1950's and how this simple commercial innovation has completely transformed world trade.
In recent weeks, U.S. ports and the container industry have been at the forefront of the media. This book offers an inside look and a clearer understanding of the ways in which containerization affects the everyday lives of Americans and people everywhere.
The book is available for order at http://www.containerization.org and will be released on April 26, 2006, exactly 50 years to the day the first container-carrying vessel, the IDEAL X, sailed from Newark, NJ, for Houston, Texas. Published by the Journal of Commerce magazine and the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII), the book records the development of the container industry in pictures, stories, interviews and observations -- the people, places, dreams, triumphs, disappointments, unexpected twists and how the container eventually changed the world.
Arthur Donovan, retired U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Professor and historian, along with Joseph Bonney, Journal of Commerce Editor and business journalist, co-authored the book. It has more than 170 historic photos -- many not seen before and not easily obtained, as many important shipping industry archives were lost in the World Trade Center in September 2001.
"For the most part, the general public purchases products – from computers to foodstuffs to underwear to toys -- and never gives a thought on how they arrived on the shelf," said Mr. Bonney. "Containerized shipping is one of the most important developments of our time. It has created markets, transformed the global economy and changed our lives. Without it, the world's biggest retail brand names would not exist."
"Containerization and the Internet are the heart and soul of contemporary globalization," said Professor Donovan. "Containerization has dramatically reduced the cost of moving all sorts of goods long distances, and that in turn has transformed how and where commercial products are manufactured and sold in today's global economy."
Proceeds from the book will benefit CII's mission of educational outreach to the public. A book signing with the authors is planned at the 50th Anniversary of Containerization Gala Celebration on April 27, 2006, at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the History of Containerization Foundation, Inc.

Tourists warned over imminent eruption of Mount Merapi
By Y. Sulaiman l eTN Asia e-turbonews
Warnings by Indonesia’s Center for Volcano Research and Technology Development on the imminent eruption of Mount Merapi within the next ten days have led to the island's administrators ordering residents to abandon their villages.
The warnings, however, have fallen on deaf ears out of fear losing their properties and livestock if the estimated 60,000 residents around the mountain leave their villages.
"The sooner they leave their homes, the better," said Java Island Governor Hemengku Bumono. "We aim to save human lives, belongings and livestock."
Village residents are still allowed to work on their farms as usual, but must return to barracks provided by the authorities at night. Mount Merapi's status is now classified “watch out/ beware,” the highest status prior to eruption. In anticipation of the mountain erupting, it is now closed to all tourists and mountain climbers.
"The government has set up refugee camps and emergency command centers in villages located five kilometers from the volcano's path," said Minister Bachtiar Chamzah. "Preparations to deal with the volcano's eruption were made months ago, with enough funds allocated."
The US government has provided US$50,000 aid to Indonesia in support of efforts in the event of Mount Merapi erupting.
"The US government will contribute the sum to the International Federation of Red Crescent which works with the Indonesian Red Cross. The agency is responsible for mobilization of volounteers, health and ambulance communications, field kitchen and relief supplies," said the statement.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) provided four telemeteric electronic tilt stations, a solar-poweed repeater station, and base station installation at Mount Merapi in 2003.
The UK Foreign Office in London has also urged British citizens to avoid going to areas surrounding the volcano. "You should avoid the areas closely surrounding Mount Merapi, follow local advice and monitor all available information, including the Indonesia Center for Vulcanology website,” the warning stated.
A British couple, however, expressed excitement at the imminent eruption of Mount Merapi spewing smoke. "It will be interesting to see an eruption. We want to come and see Merapi, especially now. I feel very lucky to be in the area."
Despite the potential dangers from an eruption, the rich, fertile soil produced by Indonesia's volcanoes still lure farmers, who follow the Hindu religion, to set up farms around them. "Eruptions happen because people living around the mountain have been disrespectful or not giving sufficient offerings."
According to Javanese mythology, Mount Merapi holds particular significance, and is one of the places where annual offerings are made “to appease the spirits.”
The 9,616 foot-high Mount Merapi, Indonesia's second most active volcano, sits astride the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta.
It last erupted in 1994, killing more than 60 people. The 1930 eruption killed almost 1,300 people.
