A good video series about making a pipe is available starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mibK_Dp-ZY however, he doesn't go into any detail about voicing. And here is his organ's website: http://www.rwgiangiulio.com/

I have investigated this website before... The mathematics page is great for pipe calculations !! http://www.rwgiangiulio.com/math/ He includes a very good Excel spreadsheet http://www.rwgiangiulio.com/math/pipescale.xls which incorporates the work done by Johan Liljencrants at http://www.mmdigest.com/Gallery/Tech/isint.html and http://www.mmdigest.com/Tech/isingform.html and also some work of his own on calculating mouth height as a function of frequency. Yes the above site and all its contents are very useful, but making pipes and voicing them are not the same, even the best set out and built pipes will still need voicing to some degree. So going back to the original post Wagner Mello on voicing is what is needed. Now what I’m trying to say is without offending everyone I think this post is getting a bit side tracked with pipe calculations and so on. It’s just that like most I would like to see more info on this subject. Sorry and I hope you don’t shoot me down for saying this, It’s just I would like to see this post going back to the original subject of by Wagner Mello. I’m not trying to upset anyone it’s just that I would like to see if anyone is willing to do some kind of video on voicing, professional or not.

Hi all, Remember I have little knowledge here..... I thought pipe voicing included the cut up, an important variable. I glued my pipes up as per clips above (own variation, own jigs etc, but essentially the same) which means the front board was glued on as per my drawings. This means I cannot fiddle with the cut up. My first few pipes, built to drawings (Gavioli origins), had the cut up too large - so I was told. A second opinion seemed to broadly agree but considered them OK as bass pipes are more forgiving. I know it all depends on wind pressure so maybe the Gavioli drawing was correct for the pipe - then but quoted too low a wind pressure (6.5") Anyway, if the pipe is glued up inc front board is the voicing only ref the 'slot'? I have found a few strokes of a smooth file to change the angle at which the air exits makes a world of difference, changing the slot from .6mm to .8mm less so. My experiance. I assume if the front board is ready glued that precludes changes to cut up unless it is sawn off and then repositioned. I have done that a few times with every success, only 1mm lost if thin blade used. Edward.

I assume if the front board is ready glued that precludes changes to cut up unless it is sawn off and then repositioned. If your pipe front is glued on with the cut up at the quoted value you should treat that as a minimum. Raising the top lip is a straight forward matter, using a sharp knife and a file, taking off very small amounts until you achieve the desired result. Regards, John
