URGENT - MIKE PRIESTNERS 89 KEY MARENGHI STOLEN TODAY! Hi Jory,
The history of Mike's 89 key Marenghi 'Lady Hamilton' is as follows (until someone with a greater knowledge than myself adds to or correct this!).
The organ was built in 1903 and is thought to be one of the earliest organs built by Marenghi after leaving the Gavioli concern, it is thought to have been originally supplied as a 70 Key instrument to Connolly's of Yorkshire for use in their steam yachts. It was later enlarged to 89 key and used by Messrs. Hardiman of Somerset in their steam gallopers. Later fairground owners include Russetts and a period with the Noyce family in their legendary gallopers.
The organ entered preservation with John Crawley the renowned steam engine colletor of Bedfordshire who has made a massive contribrution to the preservation movement on many occasions including being heavily involved in the making of 'The Iron Maiden' film (staring the Fowler showmans road locomotive 'Kitchener' which was renamed 'The Iron Maiden' for the film and also featured other engines from John's collection and many other owners). John continues to be very active in the preservation movement and writes one or two exceptional quality articles for 'Old Glory' each month.
The late Chris Edmonds was the next owner, who sent the instrument to the famous Chiappa company where it was fully restored and redecorated. At this point it was mounted on a trailer and made many appearances and gave him a lot of fun (something the preservation movement seemed to have a lot more of a emphasis on in those days!). Indeed Chris had many interesting expierences with the organ and continued to have many hilarious stories to tell right up to he's untimely death earlier this year.
One of Chris's regular bookings was for Lord Montague of Bealieu at his famous 'National motor museum' and this lead to the organ being purchased by Lord Montague in 1969. It was at this point that she gained the name 'Lady Hamilton' which came from the organ travelling with Lord Montague's ex Anderton & Rowlands 1913 8NHP Burrell showmans road locomotive No 3443 'Lord Nelson'. 1972 saw the organ removed from its trailer and mounted in the purpose built body work of the Bedford TK chassis/cab which it remains in at present.
In December 1999 the organ was sold to Nick Baker the well known Dorset steam engine collector where it was looked after by Rob Harris the very friendly, well known and talented local organ builder along with our very own Shane Seagrave, both of whom put a lot of effort into looking after the organ.
May 2005 saw 'Lady Hamilton' purchased by the current owner, Mike Priestner and his family of Altrincham, Cheshire. Mike and his family have carried out many improvements to the display vehicle to make it reliable for its journeys throughout the UK which are often with his ex Jacob Studt 1917 8NHP Fowler showmans road locomotive No 14682 'Evening Star'.
Best wishes,
Trevor.

I know the history of it being originally with "Conneley's steam yachts" gets quoted a lot but that cannot be correct. Conneleys never had any steam yachts and even if they did the organ is surely too big for the machine. The organ's correct history was reported by the late Mr Barnes the WF correspondent when he reported on the organ's restoration by Chiappa for Chris Edmonds (which he must surely have got from the firm itself) but has since been corrupted.

This is a short extract from the history of the organ which is on the back of an old EMI record of the organ...
"The Marenghi Organ from Beaulieu is a perfect example of his work. Originally it was a 70 key organ and was imported to England in 1910 by George Chiappa and supplied to Connolly's Steam Yachts in Yorkshire. It was found to be too big for this ride and Chiappa took it back, rebuilt and converted it to 87 key, supplying Connolly with a 46 key "Chair" organ to take its place. In 1920 it was again converted by Chiappa, this time to an 89 key frame with the addition of the baritone ranks on the lower front"

URGENT - MIKE PRIESTNERS 89 KEY MARENGHI STOLEN TODAY! Hello again Jory,
Thank you for your comments, however I am concerned that this could lead to the topic becoming diverted from the very important task of attempting to assist in finding 'Lady Hamilton' - something I am sure you would not want.
Perhaps if you have soild factual evidence that the organ has a different history to that which is widely reported you could start another topic under general discussions to share this with us all. If you can locate a picture, invoice for music/maintenance etc from the period when it is believed to have been with Connelly's then it would easily prove your theory to be correct and would certainly be of interest to me as I am sure it would our la-*test*-('") member Sam Bozson as he's family own 'Lady Hamilton'.
Having had a reasonable amount of experience of steam yachts I can agree that in its present form 'Lady Hamilton' would not have fitted in the centre of a set of Savage steam yachts HOWEVER should it not have had the current drum ends as a 70 key instrument then in my opinion there would not have been a problem.
Best wishes,
Trevor.

We have had no news at all and it will be ten days tomorrow that the organ went missing.
To clear up any confusion, here is a link to the history of the organ.

Hi all,
Just a quick note to tell you all that there is still not a word of news on the whereabouts of 'Lady Hamilton'.
Lets all please keep a lookout,
Cheers,
Sam

But Sam, You are only repeating what I have told you already is untrue!
Nick Williams- 07-12-2007
Jory,
Could we please keep this topic focused on news of this stolen organ and the efforts to implement its safe return, rather than diverging away onto debating the instrument’s life and history; the latter is best discussed in a new topic.
Many thanks,
Nick

URGENT - MIKE PRIESTNERS 89 KEY MARENGHI STOLEN TODAY! Hi Jory,
With the grea-*test*-('") possible respect I really do not think that this particular post is the place to start a debate about the history of 'Lady Hamilton'. Sam and his family are totally devestated by the theft and with this in mind I feel that starting a debate over the history is nothing short of inconsiderate and uncaring particuarly seeing as you seem to want to play the long game and keep your cards very close to your chest.
Surely it is far more important to support Sam and his family at this difficult time. I have the great pleasure of being a friend of Sam and his family and I can assure you that they are one of the nicest families in the preservation movement, they are all truly wonderful people. Considering his young age Sam deserves a great deal of respect for his dedication to 'Lady Hamilton' and 'Evening Star' as do all his family.
So may I please repeat my earlier statement that should you be able to provide proof that 'Lady Hamilton' has an altogether different history (something we would all be very happy to except and give you full credit for) then please provide it in a new subject for all of us to see. If you do provide this and it is 100% water tight then I am sure that all iMOD members would be very grateful to you, but you can not expect people to just except your claim without you showing what cards you are holding.
Meanwhile could we please get back to what the vast majority of iMOD members have been doing which is showing a great deal of support for the Priestner family (both on the board and by PM) and focusing our efforts on ideas which may help to find 'Lady Hamilton'.
Best wishes,
Trevor.

URGENT - MIKE PRIESTNERS 89 KEY MARENGHI STOLEN TODAY! Hello all,
Thank you Robert for your attempt to help recover 'Lady Hamilton with your ebay idea.
The campaign to raise public awareness about the theft of 'Lady Hamilton' has had a couple of major boost this week - firstly, 'Old Glory' has a sizeable piece in the news pages for which we are grateful to Colin Tyson and his staff and secondly, this weeks 'Worlds Fair' carries a large article thanks to Dr Lynne Whatmore and Peter Haywood.
Best wishes,
Trevor.

With all the publicity surrounding the disappearance of the Lady Hamilton Organ and Lorry and the total lack of information regarding its whereabouts, I just wonder how many people have decided to install a "Tracker" in their lorry or trailer?. Might help in future especially if the organ is in a sort after vehicle. Trailers are also very vunerable items
Sam Bozson- 07-30-2007
Just a quick note to say that we have heard absolutely nothing on Lady Hamilton.
Yesterday marked a month since it was stolen and it is amazing that nobody has seen anything of it especislly on the day that it was stolen - maybe it is not far away, maybe it was not on the road long enough for someone to see it and recognise it. The options are endless in where it may be.
Sam.
