The 2007 Annual M.O.O.S Autumn Trip - 'Kolhorn Kaleidoscope' You do not need to be a member of the Mechanical Organ Owners Society (MOOS) to join the annual foray to 'Le Continent' in search of the very best in mechanical music. All organ enthusiasts are invited to join us and you will be assured of a very friendly welcome on board.
We stay in excellent hotels and visit places and organ collections which are often not open to individuals. Indeed, many mechanical organ enthusiasts with substantial private museums have opened their doors for the first time to the MOOS tours. As always, travel is by luxury coach (with toilet and refreshment facilities on board) and en-suite hotel accommodation is provided with breakfast and evening meals included in the fare.
Not only is the MOOS trip a great way to see and hear superb examples of mechanical organs, but it also provides a chance to meet up with your old (or new!) friends during the quieter part of the year and see something of the history and culture of the countries that we visit. It has been said of our tours that you get your money's worth within the first two days so the rest of the trip is free!
This year the autumn tour takes us far and wide in Holland, Belgium and France. There's a chance to visit the 'open weekend' of the De Voer show family at Ulvenhout and find organs in some places where no tour has gone before!
The full itinerary is as follows:Friday 9th November
We pick up at Andover (St Mary Bourne), Maidenhead, Redhill (rail connections available from all areas), and Dover, where we take a leisurely ferry crossing to Calais. Our destination is the Hotel Marquette situated on its own estate not far from the dunes of the peninsula of Noord-Holland, an area that the MOOS has not been to for some years. A leisurely dinner will be will await us upon our arrival at the hotel, where we will spend the first two nights of our tour.
Saturday 10th November
Today we'll be heading as far north as we can go, to the sea port of Den Helder, to see and hear the famous 90-key Carl Frei street organ Harmonica. On the way we are going to take the opportunity to stop, briefly, in the historic town of Naarden! This amazing settlement is a perfectly preserved example of a 'star fort', which were once quite common in Europe during the 16th & 17th centuries. Naarden features massive walls and a huge moat which are both complete and in an incredibly good state.
Whilst we are in Den Helder there will be free time for lunch or a spot of pre-Christmas shopping whilst enjoying Harmonica playing on the streets of its home town. Always turned by hand and still on a traditional three-wheeled cart, this superb organ is one of the finest to be heard on the streets of Holland today. Anyone who wishes to flex their muscles and crank 'Harmonica' will be more than welcome to do so!
After lunch we head to the premises of Bram Vader, at Kolhorn, where a special concert is being given for us featuring the organs from Bram’s collection, including his outstanding 96-keyless, model 38, Ruth. Also, a special 'guest' instrument, the Frans Decap fair organ De Magistra, and will be presented by Hans van de Velde. Here, there will be a unique chance to compare, side by side, the magnificence of fair organs of German and Belgian origin and their powerful yet contrasting sounds.
Dinner will be taken at a local restaurant.
Sunday 11th November
We start the day with our first ever visit to the organ works of John Wempe and Paul Vooges in Santpoort. Famous as the team who maintained the ex-David Barlow 101-key Mortier De Kluisberg for many years, John and Paul will tell us something of their activities and demonstrate the two organs present, the lovely and historic Joseph Bursens organ, De Heen en Weer and a new 75-key fair organ built-in at the works.
Leaving north Holland and heading south, our next destination is the 'Open Sunday' of the De Voer showland family at Ulvenhout, near Breda. Increasingly popular in recent years, this event is dedicated to fairground organs of, chiefly, German origin. Visiting instruments will also be present in addition to those normally housed at Ulvenhout, so we can expect an occasion to savour. Our stay is planned to provide plenty of time to hear all the organs.
As an alternative, a side trip - just across the border - to the dance tent of the Klessens family at Rijkevorsel is available. Visitors will see that dance 'tent' is something of a misnomer for this magnificent mirror-palace which has been created in the uniquely-Belgian style! Here you can slake your musical thirst with music from their massive, modern-style 121-key Decap Herentals pipe organ 'Kempenaer'. Their well-stocked bar will be open to slake thirsts of a different nature too..!
We will then return to Ulvenhout for a short stay before the combined group continues to the 'Museum Dansant' at Hilvarenbeek, located above the basement workshops of the Nederlands Boekorgel Centrum (or Netherlands Bookorgan Centre). This is another place of palatial grandeur, within which the organs of the Cris Van Laarhoven collection are displayed. We will enjoy a meal to the accompaniment of music from dance, street and fair organs in these grand surroundings. We will also, of course, visit NBC's workshops to see the la-*test*-('") organ projects which are underway!
Our overnight stop will be at our 'regular' hotel when we are in Antwerp, the Novotel. Whilst there, we may have a chance to visit the famous Café Beveren on the Antwerp docks where their 'art-deco' 92-key Decap dance organ is still playing for its living some six decades after its original installation!
Monday 12th November
We journey back over the border to France visit the collection of Patrick Denoulez at the Musee De La Musique Mecanique d’Haubourdin near Lille. This will be our first visit to the collection in its new and larger premises. It contains a fascinating range of instruments, including fair and dance organs, and is all the more interesting as such collections are fairly few and far between in France.
We return to England in the late evening and set down at all pick up points as on the outward journey.
Fare: £295 per person, sharing a twin room. Single room supplement add £60 per person. Fare includes all travel by executive coach, return ferry crossing, three nights hotel accommodation, breakfasts and evening meals, all entrances and arrangements.
