Wurlitzer Style 153 on the Dentzel carousel at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin, (Pittsburgh) PA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QAKFq11DsE This is the ride and organ that planted the seed that resulted in me spending thirty years in the business. This organ may be the oldest surviving Style 153 . It was purchased new by Kennywood and delivered to the park in the spring of 1916.

Unknown Mortier
Just found this clip whilst searching on youtube. It appears to be a Mortier Orchestrion but I have no idea of who owns the instrument and what it's history is. I have certainly never seen this organ out on the rally circuit. Be warned, the quality is quite poor but it's worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pA5eGh9jSI&mode=related&search= David

Hi David, I believe that this organ was owned by the Walker family who I think came from near Ashbourne, Derbyshire (the lorry looks to be the same so perhaps it is still in their ownership?). I believe there was a cassette made of it in the early 90's. Best wishes, Trevor.

it sounds like Lady Margaret by David R. Leach now owned Ian Rogers

The façade reminds me of a Mortier organ sold by Grymonprez to the UK ...

Hi Ben, You are correct in saying that the Strumpshaw Hooghuys is ex Nigel Turner but it is not the organ featured on the 'All the fun of the fair - volume 1' tape. The organ on the tape is the 83 key LH640 (see the excellent Hooghuys site http://www.hooghuys.com/english/remainingorgans/remainingorgans.htm for more details). This organ was one of three imported by the late George Cushing of 'Thursford' fame (the other two remain at Thursford), it then went to the late Duncan Price of Pershore and then onto Nigel Turner who rallied it prior to opening the 'musical merry go round' where it remained on display until the mid 90's. It is now at the 'Auto & Technik museum' in Germany. The Strumpshaw organ has a more chequered history and does not appear on the Hooghuys site. All I can say for certain is that it was also owned by Duncan Price and was used in his gallopers, when this ride passed into Nigel's ownership he decided to use his 72 key Verbeeck in the centre and the Hooghuys passed to the late Jimmy Keys for his 'Strumpshaw steam museum'. I hope the above helps you. Best wishes, Trevor.

As far as I know, the Strumpshaw 'Hooghuys' was made up of bits and pieces coming from Belgium; nothing inside is of Hooghuys origin; the scale, however, does match the 57-key Hooghuys scale, and perhaps that's the reason why it bears this label?

Sorry, for picking up this thread a bit late, but I was out with the organ at the weekend. The Mortier orchestrion shown in the YouTube clip was indeed the one owned by previously owned by Walkers of Ashbourne. Originally imported by Charles Hart of St Albans from Oscar Grymonprez, by 1966 it had been sold to Alan Barber, who in turn sold it to Walkers. Work was carried out on the organ in 1982/3 by Andrew Pilmer and his father and a bandmaster was added. The organ was a bit puzzling in that the front was very much in the style of the Beersel Mortier, see http://www.dansorgels.nl/Mortier/mortier84torchbeersel.htm, albeit with the centre panels removed and heavily repainted. It was stated that the organ was built in 1928 and this would correspond to a front of this style. The mechanism, however, appeared to be that of a much later organ, with asymmetrical pipework, rather than the symmetrical ranks found in Mortier orchestrions of the period. On 16th May 1998 the Walker family held a public auction of various items, including the organ and lorry, which sold for £25,500 plus buyers premium. It went to a private buyer in the Yorkshire area. Has anyone seen or heard of it since? Regards, Peter

Hello all, Regarding the Mortier organ in David's post, Peter Haywoods FOPS notes in this weeks 'Worlds Fair' name the current owner as David Gee and state that the organ will be attending this weekends 'Ackworth steam show' in West Yorkshire. Best wishes, Trevor.

...and a few more! Jim Harper's 52-key Gasparini street organ (last surviving 52-key Perlee scale organ) : filmed when I was in NZ last January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdx_dLJZ8Ik more Aeolian player organ Oh That Classic Rag (excerpts) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32UrBmIa3mU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jtg47nNAAg 1900s medley waltz (excerpt) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqP-ejy5xi0 Enjoy! Adam :D PS a shameless plug for the "De Lieve Stem" CD if you haven't got it yet....which you probably haven't! Go get it! It's a superb CD with beautiful period arrangements playing on a most wonderfully voiced and balanced instrument in A1 playing condition. The sound of the organ isn't just that bog-standard "draaiorgel" sound either. It's definately a winner! Copies available from Happycow Music or KDV websites ...or Jim in NZ....
