Organ Update 7
UPDATE Compiled by Boz Oram boz@historyinharmony.com www.historyinharmony.com Welcome to the newest arrivals on this email update. I hope that you enjoy being part of it and feel free to interact with what goes on by contacting me at boz.oram@andover52.fsnet.co.uk Fortunately, some people have understood that the update is for you - and that means YOU. If you have something to promote, or a business that is interesting then everything is available to use in print elsewhere and for those who advertise on a regular basis will know the cost of it all - this is free so long as History in Harmony is quoted as the source if used elsewhere with the website. **************************** I think that this will be the last update before Christmas, so I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and exciting 2005. Do keep the emails coming to me re the update, and for those who wish travel arrangements, contact us at tours@historyinharmony.com and thank you for all of your help in 2004! Boz and Linda *************************** Santa Special at Crich 18/19 December. Your last chance in 2004 to ride within the Crich Tramway Village and celebrate the “East Midlands Best Day Out” award, as voted by BBC East Midlands Today television viewers. It has also received the coveted Silver Award for getting over 100,000 people to visit this excellent attraction. ******************************** 29th December 2005. The Stotfold Christmas Road Run at Stotfold, Arlesley, Bedfordshire which has 12 steam engines, the 98 key Gavioli of the Saunders family. The Road Run starts from Saunders Yard at 10 am and goes to the Old Oak pub at Arlesley for a lunch time get-together. Live entertainment will happen at the Stotfold Football Club and food is available from 7pm until late. For further details please contact “the man of the match” - Dave Roberts on +UK (0) 7710 802077 or email him at dave.roberts@steam-up.co.uk for any further updates. For my own penny’s worth, Dave and Nigel started this a few years ago by just steaming up Burrell Showman’s engine “Ex Mayor” for a bit of a spin down the road to remove any cobwebs from Christmas, however it seemed that there were plenty of other people who wanted to do a similar thing and the event has and is now gaining momentum year upon year. Definitely one to go to! ********************************** The Black Prince is coming out to Play. No not the Medieval Knight from the days of Yor, but Burrell Road engine No 2701 is up for sale. The only reason why this engine caught my eye was really because of another similar engine of the same make, King George VI (ex City of London) who had the pleasure of working together whilst in the ownership of J Hickey of London. In fact there are some excellent photographs of both engines in a spot of difficulty when transporting a transformer to its new installation. Unfortunately, one of the engines ended up in the ditch and a photographer was around to capture the event. Further details from Cheffins on +UK (0) 1223 213777 web www.cheffins.co.uk for the sale of this interesting steam engine ******************************* Heard on the radio - The British Library has done a recording of the earliest recordings of people such as an 1890 recording of Florence Nightingale, a later one of Baden Powell, and various other notable people like Ghandi and a few well-known voices like Churchill and Stalin. They were offered a supposedly kosher recording of Queen Victoria from the Science Museum, however the quality was too dire and you couldn’t make out whether is was truly the Queen or some local washerwoman! More details for the CD, go to their website www.bl.uk or to contact them go to sound-archive@bl.uk *************************************** Something that might interest you. This email now goes out to many, many different people than it originally did some five issues ago, so I think this could be of interest to numerous people who are in the process of rebuilding their own machinery. It seems that with the rise in the cost of scrap iron, there are some quite unscrupulous people going around with their Hyab lifting equipment and removing bits and pieces like wheels, steam roller forks and all manner of heavy stuff and taking them to the scrapyard for their ill-gotten gains. Our heritage is not sacred, which means take care of your bits and pieces, check and make sure they are still there, otherwise you may never see them again. ************************************* Road Roller Association AGM Saturday 5th March. All members have been notified with the weekend’s events being centred around the Ipswich area. Further details tours@historyinharmony.com ************************************** From Mechanical Organ Owners Society Chairman - John Glover Boz, The most recent news for me is that I am now Organ Secretary at Belvoir Castle Rally held on 21st & 22nd May. This AGM and day is also open to everyone interested in Organs. The day will also have a number of instruments at North Newington that will be announced nearer the date. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR to you ALL. John, Julie & Family( Glover ) ********************************************* The World is Open I have been asked over the years for websites, email addresses and any way that you can contact other groups. For some reason, there is not a central library that gives this information so it is with a bit of trepidation that I start with this particular group of websites. They cover much of the world, however maybe you can help me here and send me other places. As you know, when using a website, there is normally an email and postal address within the site. If you come across, or have any special favourites, then pass them on to me and I'll do the rest. Websites Mechanical Music Websites/Societies To start with, as I have tried to categorise into countries and make things a bit simpler to read. If you know of any other websites or even email addresses, then please do send them on to me. Grateful thanks to all of the societies that helped me in compiling this, however extra thanks go to the KDV in Holland. The reason for this particular area is that I have devoted the last 15 plus years to mechanical music. Other areas will be covered in due course........
