Organ Update 1
UPDATE # 24 Compiled by Boz Oram boz@historyinharmony.com www.historyinharmony.com Welcome to what I hope to be a regular series of updates in the organ calendar. Firstly, thank you for your responses, new email addresses, general comments and finally to pointing me in the right direction. I apologise here and now if your name isn't on board, but do let me know and I'll sort that out. The overwhelming response from you was really encouraging and it seems that you really want to hear about what is going on in the organ world. I have also bcc'd the email as it was pointed out that it could be possible to be spammed and doing it this way would reduce the possibility of anything getting through. That aside, the future is looking really exciting: To start off................. I was speaking to Brian Wells who most of you know as owning the rather splendid 89 key Gavioli that travels here there and everywhere! Brian tells me that he is going back to the Waldkirch Festival in June 2005, which if my memory serves me correctly is from England right down to that picturesque part of Germany and being "one hell of a long way" Funnily enough, I would love to do the same with Sharahazad, the Louis Hooghuys piano-forte instrument, but until I get hold of a 90hp "D" series upright engine to replace the 55hp engine in the 1962 built vehicle that transports it, then modern day traffic precludes me from doing so. Brian however has the bug on board and this will be his third journey down there. He also told me that he is also going to another venue on the way down in France, just south of Paris. Further information as it becomes available. Returning back to Brian, he also has a further torture for himself - that being the organising of the North Newington New Year's day organ get-together! Not content with freezing the proverbial nuts of a brass monkey, there are other organ owning people just as enthusiastic as him who wish to go out on New Year's day and remove their hangovers with a bit of musical mayhem. At the event, the local club house will be open delivering plenty of hot cups of soup and tea plus plenty of goodies to fill you up. Look in the Press for details. Talking of cold weather, for our overseas readers, the southern part of the UK is very mild so the lawn still needs cutting and there are still a few leaves on the trees and the light is just a bit dull, however it is a smashing time for those Xmas organ get-togethers in various town around the country. This coming Friday (3rd December), I will be out in the thick of it all and taking Sharahazad to West Wickham, just east of East Croydon in Surrey. Time is from 5pm till 9ish when I'll be playing plenty of un-seasonal music to a very enthusiastic crowd. Strangely enough, all of the other acts that have graced thus event have gone by the wayside, however the mechanical organ continues......... doesn't that say something? HELP PLEASE Now if any of you can, please let me know if there are anymore that can be put into this and I'll pass it on to the rest of us. Address is boz.oram@andover52.fsnet.co.uk and if you have anything else that ought to be passed onto other people, then just a short note to me will suffice and I'll put it in. Other events: As you all know, the Waldkirch Festival is getting into full swing and there are three different tours going there that we are producing - one for those who are "hard core enthusiasts" lasting for nine days, another for those who just want to get down quickly for the week-end and just visit the festival (we have secured sensibly priced transport and accommodation for this one) and finally to those people who would like something a bit extra than just mechanical music - then maybe a bit of sightseeing and other places to visit thrown into the tour might be to your taste (or spouse) instead. Just a thought, but it is always nice to sometimes have an alternative thrown into the equation. As we did on the last time we operated this tour, you can also mix and match - just email me at tours@historyinharmony.com and we'll see what we can do or go to our website www.historyinharmony.com for full details if you want to. I have to apologise about the lack of photographs, but I don't know yet how to compress them into a smaller file so that it doesn't take so long to end up on your computer. Believe you me, they keep telling us that broadband is nearly everywhere, but I think that is just pie in the sky thoughts! So until I work out how to do that, this will just remain words. FOPS AGM. Things are going ahead really well at this moment. The AGM is to be held at the Bass Museum and the evening's entertainment is at the Midland Hotel. All members who want to partake in the FOPS AGM weekend please book through History in Harmony for either the whole package of Friday night, Saturday and Sunday with transfers (should you need it) to all events from the 4* Midland Hotel to either the AGM at the Bass museum or Crich Tramway Museum (or both); just the Saturday evening dinner, or maybe just a couple of bits of the whole package. The package is flexible. Crich Peter estimates that there will be about 6-7 large organs there with hand turned instruments as well, playing throughout the day on the Sunday. There will be a reduced entrance to FOPS members £7.50 on production of a membership card. £6.50 for senior citizens and £4.50 for children Hot and cold meals are available throughout the day and the emphasis is that all enthusiasts from all walks of life are welcome to join in the festivities. prices for the week-end: Full package: £125 sharing a twin, includes 2 nights half board with transport to AGM and Crich including entrance to Crich Tramway Museum. Single room price £145. 1 night bed and breakfast £50 sharing a twin - £60 single Dinner only Saturday £20 The Crich Tramway Museum is also very enthusiastic about the fact the FOPS is holding an open day with mechanical organs and has asked whether people might be also interested in going to their August Bank Holiday Transport Extravaganza with a mechanical organ. Working on the principle that the FOPS Sunday is a trial to see where organs might be positioned within the complex determines how many can be accommodated. THE HAARLEM PHOENIX TOUR 2004 The Mechanical Organ Owners’ Society is well renowned for its journeys in search of mechanical music throughout the Continent of Europe, and the latest tour in November was to be no exception to the rule. Using specialist tour operators HistoryinHarmony.com to organise the accommodation and transportation, Peter Craig to organise the venues; it was time to make the tour full of fun and enjoyment. A short resume follows: ZAAL KOCH This is a café with a difference. In fact it was where the centenary celebrations of Gebr Decap were held in 2002 and is therefore held in very high esteem throughout the dance organ circuit to music from the resident 105 key semi electronic instrument from the workshops of Gebr Decap. WIES SCHWAGTEN In this shrine, hanging down are no less than four beautiful chandeliers illuminating this exceptional collection of eight instruments which include the 88 keyless Arthur Bursens Arburo café organ, the 72 Gebr Decap De Brabo and the 92key Gebr Decap Marie Jeanne. Three Th. Mortier organs are also present here and include the 80 key De Scala, the 101 key de Krab and finally the fine 112 key Dance organ that seems to have never been named. Returning back to Gebr Decap, we were treated to two fine 121 key instruments – Rupel 3 and a favourite, de Splendid. ZWERIS DE RUYTER This time, with the help of Herman Baum, we were told of the instruments, which include an early 70’s Pluer street organ of 52 key size, the Grote Radiokast – a 72 Carl Frei street organ that has the extra accolade of being able to be pulled by Horses (who incidentally live the rear of the property and are looked after by the family) and the 92 key Gebr Decap Elza Jose, which boasts at least 150 books from the fantastic arranger Albert Decap. KUNKELSTICHING HAARLEM As the title of the tour suggested, this was one of the main reasons for coming back to this part of the world. The Kunkelstichting, as most of you know, has been engaged in a long battle to secure new premises and now, at long last, they have succeeded! A guest organ, the famous de Pansfluiter of Adrie and Riet Vergeer was brought in for the evening. Built by van Steenput, it is one of just five instruments that are culturally kept in Holland as important pieces of history of the country. Organs in the collection ……….. The mighty 112 key Ch Marenghi Kunkels Orgel Concert Organ, the brilliantly painted 56 key Bursens Carillon, Grote Blauwe, the 68 key Jac Minning built on designs from the 68 key Gavioli Jupiter which had originally been used in a dance hall but was rebuilt by the Antwerp firm of DeVreese into a street organ. The mellow 84 key Mortier of 1914 and Rosita the ex Decap dance organ that was reconstructed into a street organ by Anton Pluer in 1974. The 84 key Zwarte Madonna of 1927, again from the Theophil Mortier factory and the 70 key Marenghi of Jankees de Ruijter. Finally to the last organ in the collection is the Mortier of Johan Weima and is the oldest of the three coming in at 1912 and 78 keys. DE VOER, ULVENHOUT The De Voer family and KDV annual event at Ulvenhout is a great meeting of people and is staged over two days and our tour was planned to coincide with the event. Organs there: Wellershaus 68 keyless, Fritz Wrede 59 keyless, 33er Ruth, Wellershaus 61 keyless of 1911, the Model 38 Ruth of Ruud Vader, the 65 keyless Willem Bruder Concert Orgel, Ruth Model 35, the de Voer Fritz Wrede, a 79 keyless Richter and finally a 41 keyless Willem Bruder. During this time there were quite a number of people who also wished to go to the enclave town of Baarle Nassau that is basically a small part of Belgium within the country of Holland for a bit of sightseeing. GUY KOEKOEKX In times gone by, many dance organs were rented out in both Belgium and Holland. Renting rather than purchasing ensured that the instrument would be looked after on a regular basis and one of the rental agencies was the Teugel Brothers who specialised in the Gebr Decap instruments and were able to supply pipe and semi-electronic organs. Mr Koekoekx now owns this agency and with it, three 105 key semi-electronic Gebr Decap organs, one of which, Krika, having been rebuilt by Teugels to be more in keeping with modern tastes, Tiko, a 92 key Gebr Decap semi electronic and finally the 92 key semi electronic Gebr Decap of 1954. DECAP HERENTALS Now the Decap Herentals family is renowned for its innovative style and approach to mechanical organ manufacture and seem to thoroughly enjoy the thrill and challenge of going into the 21st century with the most electrifying enthusiasm. The latest completed organ is a 105 semi electronic dance organ, with many thousands of LED lighting effects with the instrument, called Godfroid. Strangely enough, the instrument looks fantastic in the nude (so to speak), but when the lights play in time and effect with the music, then the visual appearance is quite amazing. They are also building another 121 key pipe organ similar to the one that we have seen, for the late August Klessens and we have been told that the dance tent will still go on in memory of him. Now something that I haven’t seen, even though I have heard that they have been produced here in the UK by Alan Pell is an automatic accordion. Mounted upon a plinth, the Piermaria is operated by their usual management system; however it also has the weird advantage of being able to be run on a 121 key system! KINDERDIJK UNESCO Kinderdijk – a truly amazing place where there are some 17 windmolens congregating in one small area dating from the 1700’s and were the Netherlands answer to keeping the threat of sinking their country back into the sea. Nowadays, Archimedes screws and various pumping stations are used to sort out this never-ending problem, but then, the windmill was the only way to do this task. It must have been quite a sight in the olden days to see all of them working and I do know that they have one day per year when they open them up fully and have as many as possible working all at the same time. CAFÉ DES ORGUES Started in 1959 by Albert Ameloot, this collection of Mortier organs are still in their working environment and it is justification for other people to do a similar thing as there are plenty of people out there who want to enjoy mechanical music but just don’t know how to be encouraged into the joy of it all. The organs are the 90 key Mortier of 1926, the 81 key that is actually the oldest working Mortier in the world in original condition (now there’s an accolade) and finally the 101/121 key Mortier that dates from the beginning of the Second world War. The collectors that we visit tend to treat their instruments as idols to a beautiful past and a generally exciting age and therefore feel that their instruments should be given a home to be proud of and as a consequence are in fine condition mechanically as well as musically. Many thanks go to all of the people who gave up their time for the MOOS tour. There are photographs for this if you wish for publishing, however please credit the article and photos to History in Harmony with a phone number - thanks and contact me either here or at tours@historyinharmony.com The next organised Mechanical Organ Tour is to Waldkirch in the Black Forest in Germany with history in harmony.com, phone +UK (0) 8700 113994 for further details FINALLY Austin Burgess is hosting the ever popular Thursford Open Day. This event takes place once a year where all the mechanical organs will be played continuously throughout the day. Instruments such as the Carl Frei concert organ (thought to have been one of his finest creations), the Gondola Gavioli, the Gebr Decap dance organ, Louis Hooghuys "Showmans Organ" plus plenty of others on show for you to really enjoy and listen to. The event takes place on the 20th March 2005 which is Palm Sunday. Should you need any accommodation, please let me know as we can arrange it for you. Austin would like bookings to be in advance if at all possible please, so that the catering can cope with the amount of people turning up and they can arrange for staff to be there and look after you. As my fingers are feeling the pain of bashing away on the keys of my pc, please do let me know of any events, venues etc that can be put in here. Even better, there are plenty of people in the business who might be making something special or might just like to tell the rest of us what they've got going on. Maybe a rebuild or two or just generally to have a chat. Please send all mail in the first instance to me at boz.oram@andover52.fsnet.co.uk and I'll sift through it. Please no political stuff if you can avoid it and as always, if you want to be removed from this setup, then please let me know on the above email. Hopefully there will be another for you to read as and when plenty of information comes to me so I won't wish you a Happy Christmas YET....................... With all good wishes from myself and Linda. tours@historyinharmony.com www.historyinharmony.com tel +UK (0) 8700 113994 fax +UK (0) 1980 621900 Published on iMOD with kind permission of Boz Oram.
