The Hollycombe Steam in the Country Mechanical Organ Festival & Fairground Extravaganza will be held at the steam collection in Liphook Hants over the weekend of the 26th & 27th July. Following the success of our first organ gathering last year this years event will be a two day one with more organs being present and we are so grateful to all the owners for their kind support in offering to exhibit their organ(s) at the event. This event will see the return to the collection for one weekend only of a cakewalk, in the form of Lawerence Bishton’s c1907 Brooklyn cakewalk. A cakewalk formed part of Commander John Baldock’s original Hollycombe collection but sadly was sold in the early 1980’s along with the other steam fairground rides several of which have since returned back to Hollycombe but not the cakewalk. The cakewalk will join the other resident steam powered rides that form the unique working Edwardian steam fairground that includes rides such as the only surviving Razzle Dazzle regarded as the world’s first ‘White Knuckle’ ride dating from around 1908, the late 1870s Mr. Fields Steam Circus dobby ride which is believed to be the oldest surviving mechanically driven ride and the 1911 single steam yacht Neptune. It is hoped that over the weekend the cakewalk will be powered by the visiting showman’s engine "Princess Marina" owned by the Searle family. Other attractions to the event will include a selection of traditional sideshows to add to the fairground atmosphere, a fairground model display as well as a display of fairground archive photos. There will also be a display of fairground showman’s living vans & transport. The collection on both days will be open its normal hours of 12 noon to 5pm with all the rides on the collections attarctions which include the steam driven fairground, railways and traction engine hauled rides operating between 1pm - 5pm. All rides are include in the admission price and are unlimited. For further details see www.hollycombe.co.uk. We look forward to seeing fellow Imod members at the event (Dont forgot to wear your Imod badge!!) :org: Anthony Hooker & Peter Davey

Thank you for the info about the upcoming festival. As iMOD is a specialist organ enthusiasts' forum I must correct the description of Richard Evans' Marenghi. It is a 49-key instrument and not a "46" as stated. Information about its unusual scale and specification can be found in the detailed article Richard wrote in KF3/03 which also appeared later in the KDV magazine. The scale consists of 8 bass, 8 accompaniment, 15 violins (some others had clarinet in the melody) and a separate 14-note piccolo section - with the 6 lowest piccolos sounding in unison with the top 6 violins but on seperate keys, and not overlapping on the same keys like the violins and piccolos in an 89-key no 4 Gavioli. The more common 46/48 Gavioli scale layout in England much favoured as a standard scale by Chiappa Ltd has 8 bass, 12 accompaniment and 22 melody. The miracle is that this Marenghi was not converted to the 46-key scale when it was overhauled by Chiappa in 1965. Please look out for it at Hollycombe as it is not rallied that often and the organ is a real gem, the perfect antidote to all those German organs heard at Waldkirch!

Hi Jory, Thanks for spotting my error and correcting me on the key size of Richard Evans's Marenghi and providing further information and history on the organ. Looks like I had a slip of the finger when typing the details, and didn't spot the error before posting! I have now edited the posting with the correct information. Regards Anthony.
